REVOLUTIONIZING EDUCATION THROUGH COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
POWERFUL TOOLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Understanding Technology Education
Understanding Technology Education is similar to navigating a map; there are countless ways to arrive at a destination. Often times, we take certain routes only to realize during our journey that there are better and more efficient options than the one we originally pursued. Other times, we encounter unforeseen obstacles that hinder progress and force us to take an alternative route. Despite this, we eventually find our way to our destination only to realize that our greatest sense of accomplishment resides in our journey towards it. With this analogy in mind, I've created a "Mind Map" outlining the main points that contribute to the implementation of a successful Technology Education Program. Here's another mindmap I created on the Tech Savy Learner.
Some of the other topics that are essential to Communications Technology include:
Getting Personal
Teaching is more of a vocation than a profession. It is a system of beliefs that frame our personal perspectives in how we see ourselves in relation to others. What began as a career in journalism has evolved into a career in teaching, yet, both can be recognized as a form of instruction; the only difference is the audience. Inquiry, inclusivity, ethics and accountability are essential to both professions if we are to empower people through information, knowledge and communication. As a result, I have always considered myself as a teacher, yet, it officially became my profession only a short time ago.
Skills Building Portfolio
An important part of moving forward is understanding where we've been. Below are some exemplars of "new" skills that I've aquired within the CommTech course which has helped document and transform the person I am into the teacher I want to be.

In the Field
Within the field of Technology Education, there is a deeper appreciation for the value that professional "experience" has on student learning. With this in mind, Carol Baptista, a long time teacher and Department Head for Technology, Business and Computer Studies with Jean Vanier Catholic High School, shares her experiences that she hopes will expand and deepen our understanding of this new and ever-changing digital landscape...known as the 21st century classroom. For your convenience, the interview with Ms. Baptista is provided in both an audio format(MP3) as well as a visual format(interview highlights in written text).
